Birds of Paradise

5 Saturday mornings, 10am – 2pm, from the 6th Nov – 4th Dec 2021

Join us on a journey exploring birds and flowers of Paradise! This brand, new course will cover all practical aspects in designing and painting your own unique illuminated composition inspired by the fantastical borders of Islamic manuscripts. We will begin by looking at the historical and stylistic context of these works of art, tracing motifs though the Silk Road to their arrival in the Islamic lands. Students will have the opportunity to learn about traditional methods of staining and preparing paper using natural materials. In guiding the class though practical drawing and painting exercises, this comprehensive course will show students step-by-step, how to design and gild their illuminated painting. The course will be supported by illustrated talks, group and one-to-one feedback, and newly created teaching resources developed over 15 years of experience with the craft.

Attendees will be able to access class recordings for up to 3 months after the end of the course, so if you miss a class, you can catch up in your own time.

Illuminated Manuscripts: Halkar Online Course

Illuminated Manuscripts: Halkar

5 Saturdays, 10am – 2pm, from 8th Jan – 5th Feb 2022

This exciting new course will explore the beautiful and delicate halkar technique using subtle gold shading on a coloured paper background. Students will have the opportunity to explore all practical aspects of traditional manuscript illumination. From preparing natural paper stains and sizes, to staining their own paper, making shell gold, gilding, and learning traditional painting techniques, we will cover all aspects of creating an exquisitely illuminated composition.

Suitable for beginners as well as experienced artists, the tutor will guide students through the process of creating their illuminated designs. Using ancient techniques, students will learn how to draw and paint the subtly gilded flowers and leaves associated with this style. The practical element will be supported by illustrated talks, group and one-to-one feedback, and newly created teaching resources developed over 15 years of experience with the craft. Taught over five, four-hour sessions, this course will give students the opportunity to learn how to design and paint their own unique illuminated patterns. By the end of the course each student will have created their own beautifully unique artwork.

Illuminated Interiors Online Course

Illuminated Interiors

5 Monday afternoons, 4pm – 8pm, from the 10th Jan – 7th Feb 2022

Illuminated textiles and interiors gleam like precious gems amid the colours and textures of Indian and Persian miniature paintings. This fun and exciting new course will explore the illuminated elements in traditional miniatures. From preparing natural paper stains and sizes, to making shell gold, gilding, and learning traditional painting techniques, we will cover all aspects of creating exquisitely illuminated designs.

Students will learn how to paint clothing, carpets, and decorative wall panels from Indian and Persian miniatures. Please note, we will not be painting figures, nor an entire minature painting, just individual illuminated elements.

The practical part of the course will be supported by illustrated talks, group and one-to-one feedback, and newly created teaching resources developed over 15 years of experience with the craft. Taught over five, four-hour sessions, this course will give students the opportunity to try different illumination techniques used in miniature painting. By the end of the course each student will have a unique and beautiful portfolio of illuminated textile and interior designs.

About the tutor:

Ayesha Gamiet studied under Master Illuminator, Ayten Tiryaki in Istanbul over a period of 12 years, and gained her icaza (traditional apprenticeship) in 2018. An experienced teacher, Ayesha holds a PGCE and MEd in Art Education from the University of Cambridge, where she has helped to train new art teachers. She was commissioned by the Royal Library to illuminate manuscript pages gifted to HRH Queen Elizabeth II, and Prince Charles. Ayesha’s artwork is in the Royal Collection. She teaches and exhibits nationally and internationally.
